Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Rationale

At Weedon Bec, our curriculum aims to develop confident, reflective, empathetic and responsible learners who understand their role within the local community and wider world. Through opportunities to listen, communicate, debate, explore different perspectives and take action, pupils will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to build positive relationships and contribute meaningfully to society. Four key priorities underpin our curriculum: communication, conflict resolution, culture and conservation. These themes encourage pupils to understand themselves and others, respect diversity and become thoughtful, active citizens.

Communication underpins all learning. Pupils need opportunities to explain their thinking, express ideas clearly, listen reflectively and make meaningful connections across the curriculum. These skills will deepen understanding and build confidence.

Conflict builds on effective communication, addressing a key area for development. Pupils will learn to consider different perspectives, understand the causes and consequences of conflict, develop empathy and resolve disagreements respectfully.

Culture develops pupils’ understanding of how communication, experiences and perspectives shape our understanding of the world. Exploring diverse cultures, traditions, beliefs and histories will broaden horizons, challenge assumptions and promote respect for others.

Conservation enables pupils to apply their learning by investigating change and its causes, particularly during the early summer term. Through observing seasonal changes, exploring habitats and considering human impact, pupils will develop their understanding of cause and effect and environmental responsibility.

Communication

Developing pupils’ listening skills is a key priority. We want children to become thoughtful communicators who listen carefully, reflect on what they hear and respond considerately. Through discussion, debate and collaborative learning, pupils will learn to express their views confidently while valuing the perspectives of others. We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of sympathy and empathy, encouraging them to recognise emotions and consider how their words and actions affect others. Purposeful writing opportunities across foundation subjects will also help engage reluctant writers by building confidence and motivation through meaningful curriculum experiences.

Conflict

Conflict resolution remains an important area for development. We want pupils to understand why conflicts arise, how they affect those involved and what their consequences may be. Through discussion, reflection and the exploration of real-life, historical and contemporary situations, pupils will consider different perspectives, question assumptions and develop more empathetic interpretations of events. They will learn to recognise the circumstances and motivations that influence people's actions. Building on the strengths of Upper Key Stage 2 pupils, who are increasingly confident in debating and accepting alternative viewpoints, we will develop these skills progressively across the school. Our aim is for all pupils to disagree respectfully, manage differences constructively and identify peaceful ways to resolve conflict.

Culture

Developing pupils’ understanding of culture and diversity is a key priority. We want children to appreciate the similarities and differences between individuals and communities and develop respect for the diverse society in which they live. Previous learning about Black culture has enabled pupils to develop knowledge and speak confidently about this area. We will build on this success by broadening cultural experiences and exploring a wider range of histories, identities, traditions and world faiths. Through meaningful learning and discussion, pupils will develop curiosity, challenge stereotypes and recognise the value of diversity. Our intention is to embed cultural understanding throughout the curriculum, fostering a strong sense of belonging alongside respect for the experiences and contributions of others.

Conservation

Our curriculum aims to develop environmentally aware pupils who understand conservation and feel empowered to make a positive difference. Key Stage 1 pupils demonstrate an understanding of conservation and the impact of environmental damage on wildlife. Our pupils can also recognise local and global environmental issues. The next step is to help pupils translate this knowledge into practical action and apply their understanding across different contexts. Building on the success of the School Council, we aim to establish an Eco Warriors group to give pupils opportunities to identify environmental priorities, lead initiatives and promote sustainability. Links with the local Pocket Park will support outdoor learning and community engagement. The school’s available land also offers an opportunity to develop a dedicated conservation area where pupils can explore habitats, support wildlife and observe the impact of their actions. Through these experiences, pupils will understand that conservation involves taking responsibility, making informed choices and working together to protect the environment.
